Customer Reviews
Great Software From Adobe!!![]()
‘Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7′ is another great
product from one of the greatest software companies in the world. If
you need both Elements packages you should look no further than this
great deal! My only qualm would be if you already have version 6 then
upgrading will not get you much more by going to version 7. Some users
have complained about the bloated size of these applications but I have
a hard time giving the thumbs down for the great Adobe brand!
Good stuff!!
**** RECOMMENDED
Sometimes, good things do come in pairs![]()
I’m no creative audio-visual guru, so this review is purely from the
perspective of a whole-hearted amateur. The only real video and
pictures I have to work with are your basic digital images, some video
of my dog and stuff, and some webcam video. Ergo, if you want a truly
professional appraisal of Adobe Elements and Premier, you’re not really
going to find that in this review. I’m a 100% amateur at all of this.
I’m also new to this particular software, so I can’t compare this to
any earlier versions. I did finally get PhotoShop at work a year ago,
but I’m so used to working with Fireworks that I’ve barely done more
than peek under the hood of Adobe’s flagship photo-editing software.
Unless I’m wrong, though, most of those interested enough in this
product to actually peruse a few reviews are probably a lot like me, as
those with a professional interest in this type of software are
probably going to be looking at the full-fledged packages of these and
similar programs. And, as far as I’m concerned, this is a great
software duo for us amateurs. Sure, the high-dollar programs are
obviously much more powerful, but who has time to figure out all of
those advanced features - which we don’t really need - anyway?
The most obvious downside to both of these programs is Adobe’s less than subtle pushing of Adobe Photoshop.com down users’ throats. Open either program, and a screen asking you to log in or sign up for this online service is going to be the first thing you see. Photoshop.com membership has its advantages and is definitely worth taking a look at, but it’s annoying to have to click past this thing every time you want to do something.
I probably won’t make Photoshop Elements 7 my new photo editor of choice, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t more than up to the task. Not only does it have everything an amateur could ever need, it provides three editing avenues: those comfortable with the program can use the Full editor and choose whatever tools you need to use. Those wanting to make a few quick adjustments can use the Quick menu to do just that, while the clueless can choose the Guided option to have the program walk you through whatever changes you want to make. The project creation options are even more impressive. Just choose the type of project you want (slideshow, photo calendar, greeting card, etc.), and the program walks you through it. It’s especially easy to add music to any of your projects; with some programs, you’re relegated to using a lame WMV or MIDI file for your audio, but with Photoshop Elements 7, you can easily import any song from your iTunes or other music libraries. Are your digital photos scattered all over the place on your hard drive? Photoshop Elements 7 makes it easy to finally organize all of them with custom tagging and other search capabilities.
Premier Elements 7 is also a great video editor for the average home user. In some ways, it really is like a really souped-up version of Windows Movie Maker. The InstantMovie option lets any doofus with a digital video recording of any kind make a quasi-professional-looking video out of it (well, unless you filmed everything in the dark or forgot to take your lens cap off - the software can’t do everything freaking thing for you). You’ve got your choice of themes, effects, transitions, you name it. Adding narration or your own personal soundtrack to the video couldn’t be easier. All those options and more are just as accessible when you decide to leave the comfortable environs of InstantMovie to go jump in the pool of actual video project creation. Smart tagging means someone like me can actually get all of his videos in some kind of identifiable order despite my serious organizational failings at the time of each actual video upload or creation.
I think this is a great software duo. If you consider yourself a complete amateur with no aspirations of greatness, there’s no reason to go out and spend more money for any bigger and better alternatives.
Version 7..different than 6?![]()
Some major and not-so-major changes to Photoshop Elements here in
Version 7. Photoshop Elements is the almost-grownup version of
Photoshop. I’m going to review Premier, the video software, in a
separate, and very detailed review. SO don’t look for that here.
There are some new features in version 7. The main one that stands out is the new “guided edit.” If you are impatient to try out all the ways to modify a photo, you can learn then quickly using a guided edit. The try-it buttons lead you through a sequence of filters and adjustments (not always explaining them in detail, however) and you can get a relatively good result. For tweaking “your way”, you’ll have to learn the underlying techniques but for an on-the-fly method, this is a handy tool and a great way to dip into the huge array of tools. But some of the new guided edits won’t help you learn how to do it on your own as they are script-based and some of these newfangled tricks only show up in guided edit, nowhere else.
If you are a new user to Photoshop Elements, there are many enhancements for communication and sharing as well as better help. If you are a current user, you might want to think if you need the latest bells and whistles. For me, I can stay with Version 6. If you share a lot of pictures and want a faster way to do some of the photo manipulation, PSE7 could be great for you.
